Europe has been the birth place of many ancient civilizations of the world. It has seen an era of the rise and fall of many powerful kingdoms like Greeks, French, British and Roman Empire. Since then European continent has undergone a huge change and today it is one of the richest regions on earth. It is the smallest continent in the world after Australia and includes some 50 small countries that are located very close to each other. Russia is the biggest nation in the continent that spreads across Europe and Asia while the Vatican City is the smallest.

The folk music tradition that evolved in Europe played an important role in spreading the culture of the region to other parts of the world. Folk music remained an indispensable part of age old European civilization. Almost each country of the European continent has its own unique culture that dates back many centuries.

Although the culture of each nation flourished in close proximity of one another, their folk music tradition varies in style, dance and instruments. Some of the most famous folk music of Europe includes French, Italian, Romanian, Greek, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Austrian, Scottish, Polish and German.

Any folk music is incomplete without the traditional instruments and European regional music is not an exception. Proper instruments add the necessary rhythm and melody to the songs which make it more pleasing. A large number of instruments are used throughout the Europe that varies from one nation to another. Some of the instruments like violin, Different flutes, harps, guitars and bagpipes are used extensively in many European nations.
